Award Criteria


Portesi has developed a set of guidelines, or principles to assist in the decision process. Applicants should be aware of these guidelines or principles, when they are considering applying for a donation.

Donations that are made seek to support programs that:

  • will have a continuing impact. Donations tend NOT to be directed towards programs that are one-time events or that are not integrated into a larger strategy for continuous change.

  • support work that complements rather than duplicates the efforts of other foundations.


What The Letter Of Inquiry Should Include


Applicants are asked to review the guidelines for donations. Inquiries regarding funding should demonstrate a familiarity with these goals. The letter of inquiry, which should be signed by the director of the organization or its board, should address:


  • the need for the proposed programs, including its objectives

  • target population(s) and specific action plan

  • the ways in which the program is consistent with the goals of this donation program

  • staff and organizational qualifications for carrying out the program

  • features that distinguish the program from any similar programs

  • the method by which the project's effectiveness will be monitored and evaluated


After receiving the letter, Portesi may request the donation seeker to submit a more detailed proposal. There is no grant application form. The detailed proposal should include:


  • the organization's current budget and detailed project budget

  • a description of the proposed work and how it will be conducted

  • the names and backgrounds of those engaged in the project

  • present means of support and status of applications to other funding sources

  • legal and tax status


What Happens Next


All requests for funding are reviewed by the donations program staff. Applicants will be notified either by telephone or in writing whether a request meets the basic funding criteria.

When And Where To Send Letter of Inquiry

Letters of inquiry can be submitted at any time in the year. Donations are granted twice a year, early during the months of January and July. At that time, applicants will be notified if their donation request has been accepted.
